Baby Grand Piano Maintenance Guide

There are several things that you can do regularly to maintain the health of your new baby grand piano. Other maintenance items may be done annually or a few times throughout the piano's lifetime in order to ensure maximum performance.

1) Make Sure To House Your Baby Grand Piano In the Right Location. One key element of piano maintenance is securing the best location for the piano in your home Interior walls protect the piano from external temperature and humidity changes. By placing it away from exterior walls, you can help to keep it in a more regulated environment. Try to keep the temperature in the piano room regulated to prevent expanding and contracting, due to heating and cooling, which can affect the sound quality and condition of the body.

2) Clean Piano Surfaces Regularly. Dust and clean the keys, and other surfaces, regularly. Keeping the piano clean enhances its beauty but, more importantly, it keeps dirt and grime from accumulating and causing long-term damage down the road. Always use a soft dry cloth, or a dampened cloth with mild soapy water. Never use chemical cleaners as many of them contain alcohol which can dry and crack the surface of the piano and its keys.

3) Schedule Your Grand Piano's Annual Check Up. You will want to have a professional piano tuner visit your home at least once a year to make sure it is tuned and adjusted properly. Baby grand pianos are especially sensitive to changes in their environment, which makes tuning and adjusting the piano action, keyboard, and pedal movements difficult. If your piano goes too long without proper tuning and adjusting, it can take several visits from a professional to get it back into good playing shape.
